LAGOS: Lekki Arts and Crafts Market

We visited the The Lekki Arts and Crafts Market which is a vibrant open-air market located in Lekki, a bustling suburb of Lagos, Nigeria this past month. I hadn't been back since the COVID-19 Pandemic but it's something I love to do when I am in Nigeria especially if I have guests visiting me.

The market is a hub for local artists and craftsmen, who sell a wide range of art pieces, including paintings, sculptures, textiles, and jewelry. It is a popular destination for tourists and art enthusiasts seeking unique and authentic African art pieces. Visitors can interact with the artists and watch them work on their pieces as they navigate the rows of stores filled with intricatly styled objects.

Here is a bronze of an Edo Warrior that I found in the market at an antique store I always stop at. The owner says its been with him for most of his life having acquired it 30 years in Benin.

Bargaining is a common practice, and prices can be negotiated to fit one's budget. The market also offers a variety of street food and refreshments.

Young Arists in Nigeria come from all over the country to Lekki Market in order to try sell their work to the vendors here. It is well known place to acquire art locally in the city and it is often the starting point for many young artists.

Other items found at Lekki Market include non precious stones; traditional jewelry; textiles and furniture primarily carved by local artisians.

Overall, the Lekki Art Market provides an immersive cultural experience that showcases the richness of Nigerian art and craftmanship.
